The effects of welded clips on fatigue crack growth in AA6156 T6 panels

Fatigue crack growth in different panels, made of AA6156 T6, was investigated experimentally and numerically. Three types panels were used, simple one, so-called base metal (BM), panel with 4 welded stringers 3 clips. Experimental investigation indicated benefits stringers, especially respect to residual life, since the number cycles more than doubled (420 Kcyc vs 195 for initial length 14 mm), but that not case clips (220 Kcyc). also performed on longer cracks (75 mm) check effect BM showing practically same life (95 50 Then, fatigue simulated numerically using xFEM. Numerical simulation trend effectiveness sufficient agreement experimental results only. Anyhow clips, additional 3-clips higher just 4-stringer, (278 265 Kcyc), improving cca 5 %, contrary results.
